Fads in books is just as prevalent today as they were years ago. Some fads and books fall out of favor because times change. Then again some are timeless.

Way back in 1947 a little book was published that has never gone out of favor. In actuality it's popularity has only grown through the years.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd is a book that most children have read to them at some point in time. It truly is a classic. One of the first words a nephew said was "balloon" while I was reading to him. That is what is so great about this book, it teaches children without even trying. It is one of the first books that mere simplicity and repetitiveness that helped lull children to sleep. It isn't too long or too short so grown-ups don't mind reading it over and over again.

Whenever is looking for a new baby gift this is one title that is always on the list. Apparently Margaret Wise Brown never lived to see her book become a phenomenon. I wonder what she would think to see her book 75 years old and still going strong.

Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-91705126989464765892021-06-01T14:35:00.002-04:002021-06-01T14:35:47.574-04:00Old Pearl written and illustrated by Wendy Wahman
Memorial Day this past weekend had me thinking of all the losses that the world has suffered. Yes we are slowly starting to recover but this recovery is tenuous at best. As much as life is starting to be lived again, there will be moments when we can't help but remember the pain and loss of loved ones. Children especially have had loss thrust upon them. There have always been books about how to explain loss to children but it is nice to see a new book that is gentle and understanding. It shows a child empathy and love along with friendship.

Old Pearl written and illustrated by Wendy Wahman is such a sweet book. It doesn't talk down to a child about loss nor does it become too sappy. I love the smooth rhythm of the words and the soft and beautiful illustrations. As I read the book I could feel the love the child has for the bird come through the page. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who unfortunately needs to explain to a child about death, whether it be about someone close to them or not.
Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-91476295381299689062021-05-19T15:34:00.000-04:002021-05-19T15:34:35.520-04:00Many Points of Me by Caroline Gertler

A few months ago I came back into work after a few days off and saw that someone had dropped a galley on my desk. The author had dropped it off hoping we could place it in the store. She had worked here ,before my time, and knew the shop and the museum.

It sat on my desk for a few days until one day during my lunch I picked it up and started reading. It was interesting to see all the little details about The Met that I could relate to. I laughed when she mentioned the pallet eraser because we still sell that. It is a great companion title to From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler....the classic children's novel about children running away to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

As I read the story I realized it was more than just a book about kids roaming The Met. It was a story of love, loss, family and friendship. Yes it is a story of a girl who wants to find out if her father, a famous painter, was thinking of her before he died but it is much more than that. During this past year and a half we have all had to deal with loss and the feeling of helplessness that brings. For kids they have had to deal with issues most usually wouldn't see until they are adults.

In this way Many Points of Me by Caroline Gertler is a book for our times....children today have lived and are living through changes in friendships, families and sadly loss. They have had to grow up faster than most parents want them to, but children are resilient and I have faith they will persevere. This books story brings this home, it doesn't talk down to the reader or give them situations they can't understand.

Besides the universal story of friendship, it gives a great behind the scenes look at how a museum works. The fact that putting together an art exhibition is not something that is done overnight but takes time and thought. As much as it takes place in the one of the most famous museums it could take place in any museum. There are so many lesson plans that can surround this book that it would be great for classrooms too.
Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-39800902518136788682020-11-05T09:54:00.001-05:002020-11-05T09:54:31.968-05:00The Couch Potato by Jory John illus by Pete Oswald

This has been a long strange year. Back in March my work shut down and I didn’t go to work for over 5 months. I was able to do some small stuff at home but not much. I thought this would have been a perfect time to work on my blog. Sadly I didn’t do much of anything all the time I was off except eat too much and watch a lot of bad TV. One of the reasons I loved today’s book is because I was pretty much a “couch potato” the whole time I wasn’t working. It wasn’t until I was about to go back to work that I started going out for walks and do things around my house. This is why The Couch Potato resonated with me so well.

The Couch Potato by Jory John and Illustrated by Pete Oswald is the perfect book for these uncertain times. This duo of Jory John and Pete Oswald has totally touched a nerve with a book that is so current and fresh.

I love the illustrations, which are charming and expressive. The book is about a potato that loves sitting on his couch watching shows and playing video games. He actually reminds me of my little nephew who loves his games. But as always there is an ulterior motive in this duo’s stories. This story reminds children (and possibly some adults) that while it is ok to spend time relaxing and sitting on the couch it is good to go out and experience the natural world from time to time. I don’t know if this book was in the works before so many were forced to stay home but their timing is perfect. This is a great book to read to little ones to encourage them to go outside and have fun.

Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-3636889023620625272020-10-06T17:30:00.002-04:002020-10-06T17:30:36.436-04:00Flooded: Requiem for Johnstown by Ann E. Burg

Today is the publication day for my sister’s new book Flooded: Requiem for Johnstown. Normally when one of her books is released I have read it a number of times. Her previous titles: All the Broken Pieces, Serafina’s Promise and Unbound were books that I read a few times before they were officially published. Ann would send me drafts or poems and finally a galley to read. This time was different. While I was there when she did research I never got to read a finished product until I got the completed book in the mail. I immediately sat down to read Flooded as soon as I got it.
I know she is my sister and I know she is a beautiful writer but I sometimes forget that her writing can be so powerful. By the middle of the book I couldn’t breathe waiting to see what happens. The book starts softly then crescendos into an action packed thriller before settling into a serious and thought provoking humanistic story. I couldn’t help but think how this story based on true events could have been about our current time. It speaks of everyday people whose lives are upended by a disaster that could have been avoided. How ordinary people become heroes and how the movers and shakers of the time shirk their responsibilities. I know this is meant to be a book for young readers or young adults but I truly feel that it is meant for all readers to savor and enjoy. Thank you Ann for sharing your words with the world! I totally forgot that it is April, which means it is National Poetry Month. At this point in time I am missing The Met Bookshop even more, it is my little corner of a great institution where I get to talk about things I love. While I enjoy talking about the museum itself, I love talking about books even more. I especially love to talk about children's books. I miss making book displays and introducing visitors and staff to all the wonderful titles we have to offer. When visitors come into the store asking for a book that can introduce The Met to a child, it makes my day. We have so many books to choose from that I take them to look at each and every one of them.
It was one of the first books published after I started working at The Met which makes it very special in my memory. More importantly<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif;">, it is a wonderful book for the whole family. I<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif;">t's t<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif;">he ideal gift <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "times" , serif;">for a family that has children of different ages.

I also love this book because the poets involved really did write about actual art from The Met. When the book was first released we celebrated by inviting a few poets to speak about the source of their inspiration. Hearing the joy each poet had in writing their poetry was truly special. A year ago who would have thought that the world would be in lockdown a year later? It is hard to imagine the world going back to the way we were. While this is a new normal, we will hopefully have a newer normal soon.

Tomorrow Most Likely by Dave Eggers, illustrated by Lane Smith and published by Chronicle Books came out one year ago. It is categorized as a bedtime story but not a typical bedtime story. I think it makes a perfect book for kids in this new world we live in. The little boy in the story is tasked with thinking of what "tomorrow" can bring, how it can bring adventure and wonder with the promise of a new day. In todays environment it is important for children to realize that things will get better and that at some point they will be able to go out and have adventures with their friends. They will once again laugh and play and learn. I was struck by the simple text and whimsical thoughts plus I have always loved Lane Smith's illustrations. He never disappoints.
I know it is be a spoiler but the meaning and message of the book can be wrapped up in the final thoughts of the story: <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "amazon ember" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">"Tomorrow most likely/will be a great day/because you are in it"<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "amazon ember" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "amazon ember" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">

Again during these unsettling times this is a message we all need---that every day is great because you are in it and we shouldn't give up on dreams of a wondrous tomorrow!
The only positive is that the trees are green, the birds are singing and it is light when I get up and come home from work.

Spring brings the dream of possibilities to fruition. It is a time to feel that anything is possible. It is an awakening of mind and spirit. When I came into work after being out for a few days I found a new book on our shelves (an aside we moved the children's book section to right where my office door is centered. It makes me happy to enter my office through a sea of children's books). Anyway I saw on the shelf today's recommendation. I loved it immediately....not just because I love everything Robert Sabuda creates but because of the message it sends. It comes out at a time of year when graduations are prevalent. This means it is meant to be a gift book for graduates. I do agree that the message it sends is perfect for the graduate but I also truly think it is meant for anyone who is struggling with thoughts of the future.
Each spread evokes something that is possible: something from nothing.....an acorn becomes a tree etc. I love how Robert Sabuda has gone back to simple white silhouette's of images....so calming and beautiful in their simplicity. While this is perfect for a graduate because it helps them continue their journey it is also perfect for anyone who needs a reminder that every morning is a new possibility. Every new experience whether good or bad can turn into something wonderful. I would give this book to someone who is questioning their life.....if someone you know is having difficulty moving forward this might gently push them onward. I love this because we all must continue to BELIEVE in a world of POSSIBILITIES....a must have book for everyone. ReynoldsEveryday I watch the news and sometimes get discouraged about the state of the world. Then I see something uplifting on social media or hear a story from a friend. I especially like to hear stories of a former coworkers children because they always say something meaningful with out realizing it.

How do we teach children to be kind and thoughtful towards others? It is not an easy task but I find books can help start the conversation.

A few years ago I wrote about a book called I Am Yoga by Susan Verde. I loved it's simplicity and authentic ideas. So I was so happy to come across her new book that teaches empathy.
Reynolds is a wonderful book that sweetly and simply shows how we should all strive for empathy. I have always been a fan of Peter Reynolds illustrations and he did not disappoint. He truly captures Susan Verde's beautiful text. What better way to teach about following ones dreams but at the same time teaching that in order to realize our dreams it is to be thoughtful, considerate and caring to those around us. This book teaches an important lesson to not just children but everyone. I not only see reading this to children but giving as a gift to anyone embarking on any milestone such as birthdays or graduations. I love love love Kevin Henkes. His books always make me happy when I see them.
So when I saw his new book A Parade of Elephants I could feel the smile creep onto my face. I have become quite attuned to seeing elephants ever since my great-nephew Ben was born. His Mom, my niece, chose elephants as her theme and that still continues even though he is almost 4 years old and mostly into skeletons, ninjas and cars.

This new Kevin Henkes book is the perfect bedtime book but also great for story time. It has counting and colors and action (I'm thinking of the "marching") which is a little bit of what children need to learn while growing. This is a great new baby book or just a great gift in general. I can't wait to read it to Ben sometime soon. I have never liked August because it still gives me that back to school feeling. But in a way even though the summer is ending the first day school was a new beginning. It turns out every morning or day or week or month is a new beginning.

I have missed writing this blog, even if I knew that no one was reading it. It gave me my connection to children's books that I have always loved. No matter where I am or what I do if I see a book especially a children's book I need to see what it is and what it is about.

This past year has been busy and stressful....work combined with finding a forever home has consumed me. When in early May the children's books in The Met Bookshop were shelved in the main shop I was so happy. I was again close to the books I loved. Not that I don't love all the books in the shop but my heart is happiest when I am recommending a children's book.

So many wonderful books have come into the shop. Here are a few that I have loved reading and recommending.......

Rosa's Animals: The Story of Rosa Bonheur and Her Painting Menagerie by Maryann MacDonald is a beautiful book that tells the story of painter and sculptor Rosa Bonheur. I love finding out about artists I never knew about especially women artists. There are so few who are celebrated and Rosa should be celebrated. Her life and work is inspirational. Her artwork is extraordinary!

I would be remiss if I didn't write about a book based on artwork from where I work.....but even if I didn't work at The Met I would recommend this book. The artwork is accompanied by new poems that were commissioned just for this book. Poets were asked to write about works that inspired them. A wonderful collection for every library.

Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman & Designer. It is a wonderful exhibit that was years in the making. I think the reason it is so wonderful and intriguing is that most people know or think they know who Michelangelo is or was. The exhibition shows all the work it took for him to become legendary. I wanted to showcase one of the books for children we are selling in the shop. It is a great introduction for a child especially if they plan to visit the museum.

Stone Giant: Michelangelo's David and How He Came to Be by Jane Sutcliffe and illustrated by John Shelley tells the story of the creation of Michelangelo's iconic statue of David. This wonderful book really shows Michelangelo's process in creating art. I can only repeat what I wrote earlier that this is a perfect book to introduce and teach a child about a classic artist everyone loves. A must have for the little artist in your life....Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-18583764229315128642017-09-05T11:06:00.000-04:002017-09-05T11:06:50.340-04:00Double Take! A New Look at Opposites by Susan Hood illustrated by Jay FleckWell it is back to school time already. It seems (as always) that the summer has flew by. For many of my friends in other parts of the world school has been back for a few awhile but here in the Northeast this is "back to school" week. My little grand nephew will be starting preschool next week. I think he will love it. Today's book is a great book for the his age group to learn about opposites. I love it because it reminds me of books I read as a child. Simple but fun....
A New Look at Opposites written by Susan Hood and illustrated by Jay Fleck is a cute book to introduce opposites to the younger set. While it is a simple book I love the retro illustrations. The whole book is reminiscent of a early Dr Seuss books but in a refreshing way. Great book for preschoolers to learn the basics. I especially love the elephant....he has such a sweet face.
Here is the book trailer----isn't it just so cute....
It has been a crazy few months. The whirlwind of selling my home and moving has kept me occupied. On top of that work has been truly busy.... which is a long way of saying the past 6 months have gone by in a flash.

It was brought home to me that time has passed when I went to the graduation party for two of my nephews....one just finished college and the other will just be beginning. This morning I talked to my sister who is packing to take her son back to school....so yes time has been flying....today is a day when I have a bit of downtime and looked at my blog for the first time in a long time. It's not that I haven't been thinking of it....I kept seeing books that I would love to write about but then being too busy or tired to get it done. I hope I can get back into suggesting so many of the wonderful books I come across....this one seemed the perfect place to start:

I came across today's book and had to laugh.....it so felt like my life....trying to remember everything.....and always realizing it was right in front of me.....

Barnaby Never Forgets written and illustrated by Pierre Collet-Derby is a sweet story of a bunny who never forgets anything like ice cream night or brush his teeth but when he needs to remember something important he can't....I think we have all been there. This is a funny book to read for story time or bedtime (although there might be too many laughs to sleep)....I love the palette of this book because it reminds me of books I had as a child. This book has a freshness to it while at the same time a sense of nostalgia. A great book for the start of the new school year...it will help to reassure children that they shouldn't be stressed about remembering everything all the time...great new book for a child's library....Enjoy!
Today is the kind of day that is for getting cozy with a good book while drinking hot chocolate. Today is the kind of day for a comforting book that will soothe the mind, body and spirit.

If I Had a Little Dream by Nina Laden and illustrated so sweetly by Melissa Castrillon is just the right kind of soothing book to sit and snuggle with on this blustery day. Nina Laden walks us through a world that is filled with Love, Wonder, Wings, Treasure and so many other little things to see and feel. It is a book to calm the soul in a not so calm world. Melissa Castrillon's thoughtful and detailed illustrations present a magical world that will make anyone want to live there. The illustrations remind me a bit of Holly Hobbie's little girl in the bonnet....just as sweet.

This is the kind of book to be read---as I said---on a snuggly kind of a day or as a relaxing bedtime story for little ones. But I also see it as a book to be given to friends ---young or old---because of it's tranquil message of dreams and love. It is a love letter to be read all year long but especially appropriate today because tomorrow is Valentine's Day.

Wishing peace and love to all!Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-79458428599255827352017-01-08T14:39:00.001-05:002017-01-08T14:39:42.350-05:00One City, Two Brothers by Chris Smith illustrated by Aurélia FrontyHappy New Years! It has been quite awhile since I have posted. This is mainly due to the fact that my new job has kept me very busy. I love working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has been a very enriching experience. One of the exhibits that I have had the privilege to be working with on the retail side was called Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People Under Heaven. It was a beautiful exhibit with some wonderful pieces of art. I say "was" because sadly it is closing today and most of the art work will go back to their original owners. It was quite breathtaking. In the exhibits shop we sold many beautiful things.....some even delicious---the chocolate is so good. Of course there were many beautiful and interesting books to accompany the exhibition. There were a few children's books but today's book stood out the most for me because of the message it sends.

It tells the story of two bickering brothers who are fighting over their inheritance in front of King Solomon. The king in turn tells the story of the beginnings of Jerusalem and two similar brothers who love each other so much that they secretly want to share their wealth with the other. It is a beautiful story that demonstrates how caring, sharing, kindness and love for others is more important than who deserves something more....I loved the way this story is told. It is written simply so that even a young child can understand the meaning. The illustrations are wonderful too...colorful and enchanting. This is an "all ages" type of book... perfect to read aloud. Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-81457171826069662372016-11-01T21:25:00.000-04:002016-11-01T21:25:32.797-04:00The Bear Who Couldn't Sleep by Caroline Nastro illustrated by Vanya Nastanlieva

It has been many years since I have been a children's book buyer but I am lucky enough to still be friends with some of my old sales reps. Just a few weeks ago I started a new dream job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of my sales rep friends realized that a book she is selling was having it's book launch right across the street from The Met. She very nicely invited me to come. I was thrilled to go especially after I looked the book up and thought it was really cute.

I went and had a wonderful time... the author Caroline Nastro was so sweet and lovely.

The Bear who Couldn't Sleep by Caroline Nastro and illustrated by Vanya Nastanlieva is a sweet book about a little bear who goes on an adventure instead of hibernating with his family. His adventure takes him to the "big city" of New York. All the iconic sights are there....the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Times Square and even my new place of employment---The Met. In the end the "city that never sleeps" is too much for this sweet little bear....and well you get the picture. The story is a great bedtime story with wonderful illustrations. This is also a perfect way to introduce NYC to the youngest among us....
It is also a wonderful story time book---I can see it being read at a pajama party too....

Here is a photo of the author, Caroline Nastro (on the left) and my friend Heather at the book launch....
I have always loved William Joyce, he is one of my favorite author/illustrators. His range is amazing. When I stumbled across today's book I was ---as I said above---enthralled. This is the type of book that would have excited me as a child. It has familiarity, adventure and excitement all wrapped up with great illustrations. I loved the idea of this book. I am sure others have seen the similarities to another childhood classic--The Velveteen Rabbit....but this book goes beyond making a "toy real" type story...it takes that sentiment to a whole new level. In this day and age children like more of an adventure. So Mr Joyce gives them that......at the same time giving validity to a child's love of a favorite toy.
Ollie's Odyssey by William Joyce is the charming and exciting tale of a child's connection to a beloved toy. The magic of that one toy to foster a child's imagination. This is a beginning chapter book for young readers. It would also make a wonderful read aloud. I can see it being read in school one chapter at a time. I loved Ollie and I loved Billy....I also loved the villains...scary but not too scary. William Joyce has done it again. He has brought us wonderful new characters to spend time with again and again....Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-4456014122986914862016-08-03T19:22:00.000-04:002016-08-03T19:31:27.846-04:00The Moon's Almost Here by Patricia McLachlan and illustrated by Tomie dePaolaI can't believe it is over a month since I last posted. It has been a crazy summer. I did enjoy some time down the Jersey Shore with my family but other than that work has kept me busy.

I have many lists of books I want to talk about but as always a book jumps to the top of the list in an instant. Last night I was at the library picking up a book I requested. More on that later after I read it~~suffice to say I am looking forward to reading a book by one of my favorite authors. Anyway while I was there I perused their new picture books on display. I was bowled over by today's selection.

Oh and also while I was there I got the best compliment ever. As I was putting the book back a patron asked me a question. He thought I worked there. That to me is an honor to behold.

The Moon's Almost Here written by Patricia McLachlan and illustrated by Tomie dePaola is my new favorite good night story. It's soothing and lyrical text match perfectly with Tomie's sweet illustrations of his mime character Pierrot and his child. I love how each page depicts a different animal going to sleep.
Here is a taste:

The moon’s almost here.
Robin sings in her nest.
Babies fly back to her,
ready to rest

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">This simple text and wondrous illustrations beg to be read night after night. I look forward to reading it soon to my little Benjamin. He will love Tomie dePaola as much as my niece, his mother, did when she was little.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">This is a perfect new baby gift or birthday gift for all children. A must have new book and instant classic.
We ended up one town over from him, Madison NJ. I have always loved Madison....it is a quaint town with cute shops and lots of restaurants. Now my brother knows I love books so he showed me the newest Independent bookseller Short Stories Community Book Hub...I loved it. It is in a great location and has great space. It is more than just a bookseller it also hosts community events and music. After we left he then brought me to another store a few doors down---the Chatham Bookseller (it used to be the Madison Public Library)...I was in heaven. This is a wonderful used bookshop with shelves and shelves of books---some really old. I just took in the sight and the smells...there is nothing like the smell of a bookstore.

Little did my brother know that he gave me the best birthday present ever by introducing me to not one but two of my favorite places to visit.

This past Wednesday I again was in downtown Madison. I was waiting for a friend so that we could go to see the production of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged)(revised) that was being performed by the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. While I was waiting for in the Short Stories Community Book Hub I read today's book selection.
She becomes very attached to the puppy but then realizes it must belong to someone else. This is the perfect book for anyone who loves a good animal story that also teaches about empathy and caring. It is also a perfect way to explain why getting a pet from an animal shelter can be very rewarding. I loved the illustrations too....they are whimsical and sensitive at the same time. I highly recommend it!Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-21091385485672030032016-05-22T12:17:00.000-04:002016-05-22T12:17:01.438-04:00Paper Hearts by Meg WiviottBack in February I was part of the Cybils Award panel for Poetry. I have written about a few of the books but not all. This week I was reminded of one of the finalists....Paper Hearts by Meg Wiviott.

Like many people this week I was intrigued by the story of the Auschwitz mug that had hidden jewelry under a false bottom.

I am always amazed to learn a different aspect of history. When I read Paper Hearts, which is based on a true story, I learned how some victims fought to survive in concentration camps during World War II. The young girls in the story tried to retain who they were by doing little things. Such as wearing a silky shirt under their uniforms or sharing their food with others. Even if it meant punishment when caught. The title refers to an origami heart that is made in secret as a birthday card for another girl. It is this simple act which helped these courageous girls retain their dignity and personality. It is a very powerful story that resonates even today. It is definitely a crossover YA to adult novel.
The "paper heart" is real and can be seen in the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre. These are real items--- the heart and the mug.....real items that stand as a testament of people who suffered and serve as a reminder of the human spirit.
I recently went back to work after my winter hiatus and it has been non-stop ever since. While I loved the warmer winter we had I am not thrilled with this colder and wetter spring. The first event we held this season is an event called "Sheep to Shaw"...it was a rousing success. It was a beautiful weekend and there were baby lambs to be seen that the children loved. In the shop we bring in lots of little stuffed lambs, sheep and animals. We also bring in a plethora of books. One of the books is today's recommendation.
This is a fun book that teaches about color, size, action and reaction. One of my co-workers brought his four year old little girl to work the other day. She is so cute that we sat and read this book together. I do miss reading to little ones and her reactions were perfect. This is a great story time book that can be read again again. I love books like this because it is very interactive between the child and the reader. Sometimes it is the simplest books that can be the most fun.....Rosemary Marottahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09131716469876308662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5444010223602986878.post-41209608750855809242016-04-03T14:04:00.000-04:002016-04-03T14:04:01.371-04:00Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha ArcherI love Poetry Month...especially when I find find new books to read and uncover. This one jumped out at me because one of my favorite people is my nephew and godson Daniel. He is a bit old for this book as he is in college but it still reminds me of him when he was a little boy. I remember our walks with his constant monologue and questions about all that we encountered....from cars to the pond and animals we met along the way.
Daniel Finds a Poem written and illustrated by Micha Archer is a wonderful introduction of poetry for a child. What is Poetry? This sweet book is the story of a little boy who wants the answer to that question. He discovers it all around him as he walks through the park from the animals and creatures that he meets. At the end of the book Daniel presents all he has discovered in the form of a poem. This book is not only an introduction to poetry but to nature as well. I love the lyrical way in which it is written alongside it's sweet illustrations. This is a perfect book for a classroom, library or a child's bookshelf. A great book to be read again and again. Good Morning Yoga: A Pose by Pose Wake Up Story written by Mariam Gates and illustrated by Sarah Jane Hinder is a sweet new book that teaches Yoga to the very young. It does so by incorporating yoga poses into a little story filled with imagination. Last fall I recommended another children's yoga book called I Am Yoga. At that time I had only taken one yoga class myself. Since then I have been taking classes run by my sister in law. I have found them to be very soothing and inspiring. I have another friend who teaches yoga to children. When I found Good Morning Yoga I thought of her. This is a perfect companion book to I Am Yoga. I love the soothing way this new book is written. Each pose is written as a little adventure. I personally liked Mountain Pose and the way Downward Facing Dog is presented. In today's world children tend to not get up and move as much as they should. This would be a perfect practice for a child first thing in the morning or anytime. A way for them to stretch and move in a gentle manner. At the end of the book there is even a bit about meditation....which can be very calming. I think any book that instills a feeling of calm and focus can only be a good thing. At the link there are additional links to videos of the book...Something to enjoy!

All We Know by Linda Ashman and illustrated by Jane Dyer shows that same promise of the beauty of Spring. Jane Dyer's illustrations always touch my heart and make me feel warm and fuzzy. They also remind me of my niece when she was little. My niece has a little boy of her own now and so they remind me of him too. The sweet illustrations combined with Linda Ashman's tender prose make a perfect match. I love this new book. It is the perfect read aloud for either a story time or bedtime. It is more than just a story of a mother's love for her child but it is the story of the beauty of the natural world around us. A perfect new baby gift.
