What Color is My World? The Lost History of African American Inventors by Kareem Abdul-Jabar with Raymond Obstfeld and illustrated by Ben Boos & A.G. Ford is a great new book that tells the stories of some unsung American Inventors. It is told in a picture book format with a set of twins to guide the story along. I had no idea that Kareem Abdul-Jabar was such a history buff. I was aware of him but I didn't really know much about him. I did a little research and found out he loves history and is an accomplished author. So in my mind this not just another celebrity book. I love the illustrations too....very beautiful and accessible.

I have always been very curious and would have loved to have this book as a child. The story follows a set of twins who banter back in forth and keep the story moving. I like the idea of taking fiction and wrapping it around non-fiction, that way it doesn't seem like a history book. So many inventors I never knew about which is always the best part of learning history.....discovering something new. This is a great book for the inquisitive child in your life....a perfect way to teach without "teaching".....

(Oh and I think it might inspire some children to become engineers especially since it tells how the Super Soaker Squirt gun was invented by Lonnie Johnson a nuclear engineer!)

Happy Chinese New Year! This year is the year of the Dragon...my favorite (can you guess why?) I always liked the dragon the best and not because of the obvious reason. It is the only animal symbol that is a mythical creature....not a "real" animal.

Chinese New Year's Dragon by Rachel Sing and illustrated beautifully by Shao Wei Liu is a great way to learn about this wonderfully colorful and tradition filled holiday. There is a mix of story, fantasy and family customs that I truly enjoyed. This is a sweet classic story to settle down and read with your children at this festive time of year. Happy New Year!

Hugs From Pearl by Paul Schmid

Whew I almost missed it... Today is National Hug Day! I like the idea of hugging....it is warm and friendly and does make me feel better....especially if it comes from someone I love.

Hugs From Pearl written and illustrated by Paul Schmid is a wonderfully sweet new book that is sure to become a family favorite. I love little Pearl because even though her hugs are "ouchy" everyone still loves to get them. I love her sweet face....Mr Schmid really captures the innocence of childhood in her expressions. This is a beautiful read aloud that I would have loved to read at story time. Perfect for a one on one read aloud or for a group....either way a lovely book to share with a child.

We March written and illustrated by Shane W. Evans is a wonderful new book that simply explains one of the most important dates in American history and the Civil Rights Movement. This period of time is hard to explain in many words on a good day. The fact that Mr Evans has done it simply and beautifully without too much fuss is a testament to his talent. This beautiful book is the perfect introduction to help explain a turning point in our history. Dr King would be proud....

In my family the Christmas holidays are not over until the Epiphany, January 6th. My Mom always celebrated the twelve days of Christmas. On Three Kings Day....today she would make a special dessert, we of course would get a present. When I was younger my Dad and I watched a TV Special called the Fourth Wise Man starring Martin Sheen. He really loved it. I didn't know until I was older that it is a classic story written by Henry Van Dyke. Here are two versions of both Three Kings and the Fourth Wise Man that you might want to add to your collection of Christmas books!

We Three Kings by Gennady Spirin is a beautifully illustrated version of the Christmas Carol. Love her work.

The Other Wise Man by Henry Van Dyke and illustrated by Robert Barrett is a beautiful version of the this classic story.

Happy New Year! I was out window shopping today and came across a book that reminded me of my niece Celia. I can't believe that she is pretty much a grown up now and all I could do is think of how she was when she was a little girl. The girl in this new picture book reminded me of her.

I Had a Favorite Dress by Boni Ashburn and illustrated by Julia Denos is the story of a little girl who loves a certain dress and wears it on her favorite day of the week. As time goes by the dress needs help....so her Mom constantly reinvents the dress into something else. The reason this reminded me of niece is because she has always loved clothes and would change her outfits a couple of times a day. She too had a favorite dress that sadly became too small and when she tried to put it on again she got stuck in it. I smile when I think of my sister trying to help her out the dress without cutting it off. This is the perfect book for a little girl (or grown up girl) who loves to dress up or just loves clothes. It is a great reminder at New Year's too that time moves on even if we don't want it to. I love the way this is written and whimsical illustrations. A fun new book for the New Year!

Flashback Tuesday: I Miss You Every Day by Simms Taback

Today we got the very sad news of the death of Caldecott winning author/illustrator Simms Taback. It made me think of all the wonderful books he has given us. I know he won a Caldecott for Joseph Had a Little Overcoat --- which is a wonderful book but I wanted to suggest a book I love.

I Miss You Every Day written and illustrated by Simms Taback is a sweet and whimsical story of a little girl who misses someone so much she decides to mail herself to them. I always thought this book would be great to read aloud. It has a great rhythm to it that makes it perfect for story time. I love the endless possibilities for crafts and discussion. We have all experienced someone we love being far away....this wonderful book helps us understand we are not alone in missing them. It is ironic that this should be my favorite Simms Taback book as we will miss him very much.Thank you Mr Taback for bringing the world so much beauty and joy. You will be missed.

The Sigh by Marjane Satrapi

The Sigh written and illustrated by Marjane Satrapi is a beautiful fable that is more than just a story for young readers. I was struck by the cover which is so eye catching. When I read the first few pages I was reminded of the classic fairy tales and fables that I love. It is described as being a graphic novel. The book does have many beautiful illustrations that advance the story but it doesn't seem like a graphic novel in the truest form. The illustrations had a familiar feel to me so I did some research and realized I know the author from her Academy Award Nominated film called Persepolis. This film is based on her book (a memoir) of the same name. I had never seen the film but remember seeing reviews and previews of it when it first came out.

Marjane Satrapi is a wonderful storyteller who immediately captures the readers imagination. This would be a great book for children and parents to read together snuggled up by the fire on a cold winter's night.

Moishe's Miracle a Hanukkah Story by Laura Kraus Melmed and illustrated by David Slonim is a really fun Hanukkah story about a good hearted man who is given the gift of a magic skillet which makes endless latkes. It is a wonderfully illustrated and well told story that transcends the holiday it was inspired by. I like the way the Rabbi saves the day. I really love how the illustrations play on light and dark. This book makes a great holiday read aloud...and also makes me crave a good potato! Happy Hanukkah! latke

Teacher Gifts for the Holidays!

It's that time of year when parents need to get gifts for their children's teachers. I know this gets harder and harder each year because as children get older they usually have more than one teacher a year. When my sister taught school she would get lots of baked goods and mugs....believe me most of the mugs in my house were given to her by her students. I thought I would give a suggestion for a great teacher gift. Not quite original but a good reminder.
A friend of mine who is a teacher told a story of how her class is reading about Antarctica and how her kids can't get enough stories about penguins etc. She said she borrowed the Magic Tree House #40: Eve of the Emperor Penguin from her son and they loved it. He insisted that she was only to "borrow" it as he wanted it back some day. I love that story!

This is what parents can get their teachers....books for their classroom libraries. Why not buy a book your child loved or something in that subject matter and donate it to a teacher's library. A gift card to a local independent bookstore would also be great! This way you are not only helping cash strapped teachers but the community as well. Teacher's always need more than one copy of a book too, especially if it is a popular title.

Another suggestion is to help teachers with supplies....so many of my teacher friends spend their own money to support classroom activities....they don't make much as it is, so any help would be appreciated. Bring some holiday spirit to the people who see your child each day and take care of them....it is a great way to give back!

The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden and illustrated by Barbara Cooney is an old favorite that I had forgotten about. I was recently reminded of it when blogger Read Aloud Dad posted the cover on FB. I love this story of a little orphan girl who longs for a home and a doll who longs to be loved. This is a timeless and nostalgic tale that should be read year after year. It should be part of any family tradition. A must have Christmas book!

This is a perfectly fun read aloud that is great for story time. It is sure to inspire a child's imagination. A great new book that is a must have for any child. Today is my sister Ann's birthday and for the last few years I have suggested books about Emily Dickinson as it is Emily's birthday too. You can read about them here and here....they are still wonderful books especially Emily by Michael Bedard. Today I am writing about a childhood favorite because whenever I see this book it reminds me of my sister.

Come Back, Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish and illustrated by Wallace Tripp is not one of the more popular Amelia Bedelia books but like I said it is one that I love. This was my introduction to the character who is Amelia Bedelia. I remember reading it for the first time and laughing out loud. My sister Ann bought this for me when I was feeling a bit down in the dumps.....I don't remember why I was sad but I know I was. It was just like her to try and cheer me up....she has always done that for me. It was appropriate she would think a book would do the trick....after all she is a writer. It is a great beginning reader book that is perfect for the silly reader in your life....

Santa Calls by William Joyce is one of my all time favorite Christmas books. I bought it for myself when I was still working in the stores....here is my original blog post from 2009 . As today is the Feast of St Nicholas I thought it would be a good time to revisit this new classic story. I still get a warm feeling when I read it. When I met William Joyce way back when he talked about making it into a film. I am not sure if it was just wishful thinking on his part but I wish it would still happen. In today's world I think Santa Calls would make a great 3D movie...life action or animated. Even if it isn't a movie it is still a classic book that should be read by all......

I think I have mentioned before how my nephews were always a bit obsessed with LEGOs. When they were younger and we went on vacation they always took a huge bin of LEGO pieces to play with. It was always funny how we, the adults, would be scrambling around the beach house trying to gather all the pieces on the last day of vacation. I can remember countless times being with my nephews and playing with the LEGOs in their basement. My structures always looked the same but theirs were very intricate.
I wish I had today's book to reference....

The LEGO Ideas Book by Daniel Lipkowitz and published by DK Publishing is the perfect gift this season for the LEGO lover in your life. It filled with wonderful new ways to use the LEGO pieces that seem to multiply like rabbits in the house. It is set up with different chapters including transportation, buildings, kingdoms (my favorite) and "useful makes". So if you don't know which LEGO set to buy this year maybe you should just give this book....as it can extend the life of previous LEGO gifts.

About a year ago I was shopping (well really just window shopping) when I came across a set of books that looked old but were just repackaged new editions of classics. It always amazes me how some stores can get so creative about what they sell. It is fun to find books in unusual places.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain with an introduction by Darren Shan was the first title I picked up from the display. As it is Mark Twain's birthday or should I say Samuel Clemons birthday I thought it was a good time to suggest these books. I loved the feel of the book and the cover art. When I opened it up and noticed the beautiful endpapers I felt like I had found a treasure. It may look old and retro but it has a freshness about it that begs to be bought, read and placed on a shelf to be enjoyed for years to come. I can't believe the holiday season is upon us. It has already been a busy few weeks. Hopefully I will be able to post some great gift ideas for the children in your lives....starting with something I would have wanted as a gift when I a kid.

Ancient Egypt: Tales of Gods and Pharaohs written and illustrated by Marcia Williams is a wonderfully illustrated book retelling nine stories of Ancient Egypt. I am not usually a person who likes comic strip type storytelling but this one works for me. I think it is because the illustrations remind me of hieroglyphics, which is a very appropriate way to tell stories about Ancient Egypt. It is a very accessible and fun way to learn history. Like I said I would have loved to get this as a gift when I was young....(oh who am I kidding I would love it now!)

According to Anita Silvey's Book a Day Almanac it has been 85 years since Mary Poppins first came on the scene.

When I was a little girl I got for Christmas one year my one and only Mary Poppins book.

Mary Poppins in the Kitchen A Cookery Book with a Story by P.L Travers, illustrations by Mary Shepard and Culinary Consultant Maurice Moore-Betty is one of my favorite childhood books . I only knew Mary Poppins from the movie so when I got the book I was intrigued to read that there were more children and that Mary Poppins was actually a part of the household for more than a couple of days. I loved reading the story and reading the recipes. I can still see myself making the roast chicken with the help of my Mother. I still have my copy with food stains all over it and my Mother's handwriting where she had inscribed it with my name and year of the gift. It is something I will always treasure.

It is actually a great little cookbook....the recipes aren't hard and the story is sweet. I perfect little gift to share.

This is the Feast by Diane Z. Shore and illustrated by Megan Lloyd is a perfect way to get a child ready for Thanksgiving. While it isn't necessarily a reference book, it does tell the story of the pilgrims from the time they step on the Mayflower to the first harvest in their new land. It is written in verse so it is easy to understand and the illustrations really capture the hardships and joys of these adventurous people. This is a must have book for the child who is just starting to understand what Thanksgiving is all about.

Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet

Thanksgiving is two weeks from today. It seems like the years are going by so fast. When I was a kid I loved watching the Thanksgiving day parade...the balloons always amazed me. On my bucket list is going to seeing the balloons inflated the night before Thanksgiving. This seems more exciting then the parade itself.

Balloons Over Broadway written and illustrated by Melissa Sweet tells the story of Tony Sarg a German immigrant who was also a puppeteer who worked for Macy's in NYC and decorated their windows. When the annual parade decided to take out the live animals that were usually in the parade, Mr Sarg developed the idea of using balloons. This is a special book with wonderfully rich illustrations that is a great way to get into the Thanksgiving holiday spirit. I wish I had this book when I was a kid because I always wondered who got the idea to make these huge and incredible balloons. This is a great picture book biography that is totally easy to read. I have always been a fan of Melissa Sweet's illustrations and this book is no exception. A truly must have Thanksgiving story book that should be read every year.

It has been a while since I posted....freak October snowstorms can certainly throw off anyone's timing.

Today is Bette Bao Lord's birthday....so many know her from her book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson which is wonderful but not the book I think of when I hear her name.

When I was young and had started reading voraciously I would grab any book that we had on our bookshelves. One day I discovered a book that was my sister Ann's and was mesmerized by it. It was Bette Bao Lord's first book as told to her by her sister Sansan called Eighth Moon: The True Story of a Young Girl's Life in Communist China. I loved this book, I didn't really understand communism I just knew that it was about a beautiful little girl who got left behind and the struggles that she had. I loved Sansan and always wondered (and still do) what happened to her. I know that the book is basically out of print but I think it should be back in print. It still has lessons to teach the world today. Every student who is learning about China and communism should be required to read it. It would also make a great companion piece to In the Year of the Boar so that children can see the juxtaposition of two sisters and how different their lives were. Eighth Moon is one of my fondest book memories....

Tucker's Spooky Halloween by Leslie McGuirk

I can't believe that I am just discovering these cute books by Leslie McGuirk. Tucker is the most adorable little character who should be seen by everyone. In this really fun Halloween book, Tucker's Spooky Halloween, Ms McGuirk treats us to the wonderful idea that a dog can decide what he wants to dress up as. This is so funny because I just read an article about how pet costumes are almost as prolific as kid costumes for Halloween. I know so many dog owners who dress up their pets that I have always wondered how the pet feels being dressed in costume. This is a great book for the pet lover in your life not just a great read aloud for children. I look forward to writing more about Leslie McGuirk's books....she is a wonderful storyteller and illustrator.

In honor of the George Washington Bridge's 80th birthday I thought I would recommend a favorite book from childhood.

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift and illustrated by Lynd Ward is a classic book from 1942 that tells of a little lighthouse that was built before the GWB was even thought of. When the bridge comes along it overshadows the little lighthouse but in the end the lighthouse saves the day. It is based on a real lighthouse that can still be seen below the great bridge. When I was little we used to take the GWB to my Grandmother's house in NYC. I remember trying to strain my eyes to see if I could see the Little Red Lighthouse....for visitors to NYC this would be a great unique place to try and find and see.....a true piece of Americana. My neighbor across the street loves Halloween. Every year the display on his lawn grows and grows. This year it startled me even more when I got home one night and saw a huge blow up of Dracula staring over at me. Apparently he decorates the inside of his house even more than the outside.....gotta love it when people are that enthusiastic about a kid's holiday!

National Geographic Kids Halloween Book of Fun by the National Geographic Society would be the perfect book for my neighbor. It has loads of fun activities and games plus it has costume ideas and tips for having a great party. It has something for every child in the house (or grownup) no matter what their age. I love the section that talks about spooky myths.....I even learned a few things.

This is a great book to have fun with at this time of year.....a must have Halloween book for the spooky in all of us!

Hampire by Sudipta Barhan-Quallen illus by Howard Fine

Hampire by Sudipta Barhan-Quallen and illustrated by Howard Fine is a really fun book to read at this time of year. It isn't necessarily a Halloween book but it is supposed to be a spooky book albeit played for laughs. I have always been of fan of Howard Fine every since Piggie Pie (my niece Celia loved that book) so I was thrilled to see his illustrations in this funny book. The way he draws his characters and the expressions he gives them are priceless. It is definitely a story time book but for an older child... really young children might not get the "vampire" references or some of the "in" jokes. It is still a fun read. Oh and the fact that "Hampire" is (spoiler alert) really a vegetarian makes it even more adorable to me. This is a great new book that can be read anytime of the year....not just for Halloween.

I can't believe Halloween is a few weeks away. Last year I suggested a number of Halloween Activity books that still are good today....but I was excited to find this great little book that has wonderful ideas to help with anyone's Halloween party.

Everything for Your Halloween Party from Golden Books is a fun book with cutouts to make Halloween decorations including party hats and a centerpiece. While this would be fun for a children's party I think it would be great for a grown up party too! It was originally published in the 1940's so it has a great "retro" feel to it. As you know I am big on the "retro" enjoy!

The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot by Margaret McNamara and illustrated by Mark Fearing is a clever retelling of the Three Little Pigs.....I love stories that have been re-imagined especially when they are done well. This is a great book to also introduce the planets to children....it isn't a "science" book as stated in the Author's note but the planets are depicted and in a realistic way. This is the perfect way to also introduce fairy tales to your kids...read this and then go back and read the original. I would have loved to read this at story time as a new book selection....the activities that can go with it are endless. This is a fun new book....

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and illustrated by Jules Feiffer is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of it's publication. This classic book with it's iconic cover has never gone out of style. It is still a perennial on school reading lists which is how it should be. Even though I have shelved this book and read about this book for years and am a huge fan of both Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer, it wasn't until a few years ago that I actually read it myself. It was not at all what I imagined it to be....it was even better. I couldn't believe it took me so long to finally pick it up and read. I loved the word play and the characters...how many times have we felt like Milo---bored with everything. This is a must have classic that every child should and every grown up should re-read.....it may be 50 years old but is still young at heart!

M.O.M (Mom Operating Manual) by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Laura Cornell was a thrill to discover. I love Laura Cornell's illustrations and recognized the her art work as soon as I saw the cover. I am also a big fan of Doreen Cronin who has a great writing style. This is a fun book to read. This is the kind of book I would have loved to read at story time because I know the parents would get a kick out of it. I like how it has been published now and not just in time for Mother's Day. Although it would make a perfect new mother gift. Some might say the language is a bit too adult for kids to understand but since I don't believe in talking down to children I think it is worded perfectly.

I haven't posted in awhile....but that doesn't mean I haven't been thinking of books that might interesting to read. I found this really great title about Football but it has been postponed and I don't like to write about books that are not available yet. Luckily from the same publisher I saw that they have a new book on the history of baseball. Which turns out to be ideal because MLB playoffs started this weekend------Go Yankees!

First Pitch: How Baseball Began by John Thorn and published by Beach Ball Books is a wonderful history of Baseball for kids. I even learned some things. I love how it is written by the official historian for MLB----he does a wonderful job of explaining how baseball came to be the game we love today. I also love his use of vintage photographs ---- fun to look at. This is perfect for the baseball fan in your life.

As promised from yesterday here are a few new titles that were just published about Autumn....I am sure there will be more next year:

A is for Autumn by Robert Maass is exactly what the title proclaims. I know I recommended an older title of his yesterday but I also like this book. He does take very vivid photographs and I think this would make a great companion piece. Click the link to see a really cute video of the book. Ages 3-6

Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka and illustrated by Chad Cameron is a clever picture book with great illustrations that has a "find the mistake" aspect to it. A great classroom book. Ages 4-8

I See Fall by Charles Ghigna and illustrated by AG Jatkowska is a sweet little book that is part of a series of books about the season. Ages 3-6

The Leaves on the Trees by Thom Wiley and illustrated by Andrew Day is a clever picture book that can be sung to the tune of " The Wheels on the Bus"....another great classroom title but would also be a great book for story time. Ages 3-6

These are just a couple that I thought would make great new additions to either a classroom library or an at home library....Happy Fall!

Flashback Tuesday: Books about Autumn

There is a definite chill in the air and since Autumn starts this week I thought I would suggest some of my favorite books Fall books. For some reason Fall or Autumn titles always sold better in than other season. Winter books seem to do well but mostly if it has a holiday theme. Like I said today's books represent books I would put out on display....I always liked to mix fun books with informative book....basically something for everyone.

I Love Fall by Alison Inches and illustrated by Hiroe Nakata great little touch and feel board book for the littlest hands.

Count Down to Fall by Fran Hawk and illustrated by Sherry Neidigh this is a sweet book for ages 4-8.

Ready for Autumn by Martha Jocelyn is another board book that shows children what to wear in the crisp air....for ages 2-5.

Why Do Leaves Change Color by Betsey Maestro is a classic read and find out book that tells children in a fun way how the leaves on the trees change color. It includes great activities to do this time of year with leaves etc. Ages 4-8

Red Leaf Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert is a perennial favorite that should be on every child's bookshelf. Click on it to read my original post from last year.

Clifford's First Autumn by Norman Bridwell is a no brainer for a story time about Autumn....children love Clifford. It is a fun and easy read. Ages 2-6

When Autumn Comes by Robert Maass uses wonderful photos to simply tell the story of Fall. Ages 4-7

The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z by Kate Messner is for the older child ages 9-12. I wrote about it when it first came out and still feel it is the perfect read for this time of year.

Pickles, Please!: A Dilly of a Book by Andy Myer

I love Farmer's Markets....especially since I work at one selling my sister-in-law's Veggie Burgers. One of the things I learned is that everyone loves "pickles".....I never knew that. Of course the pickle stands sell more than pickles like olives and peppers etc. What I love the most to watch is how all the kids love to go and get a pickle on a stick.....they are so cute walking around the market eating their pickles. Some kids are so funny because they will have a pickle on a stick in one hand and an Italian ice in the other....I can't imagine what that combination tastes like. This is why I immediately fell in love with today's recommendation.

Pickles, Please! A Dilly of a Book by Andy Myer is a great book about a little boy who loves pickles. He can't get enough of them. He loves them so much he steals away on a pickle truck to go to the pickle factory. I love the way it the book reads and the fun cartoony illustrations. This is one of those books I would have loved to read at story time.....oh the activities we could have done....and the pickles I would have brought in to eat! This is perfect for the pickle lover in your life!

Flashback Tuesday: The Moon Lady by Amy Tan illus by Gretchen Schields

Yesterday was the start of the Moon Festival....a yearly harvest festival celebrated by the Chinese and Vietnamese people. I always liked this festival because I have always wanted to taste a Moon Cake.

The Moon Lady by Amy Tan and illustrated by Gretchen Schields is a wonderful book to read during this time of the year. I have always been a fan of Amy Tan's book The Joy Luck Club and remembered this story from that book. It was only natural for her to tell that same story in a children's version. Besides being a great introduction to Chinese culture for children it is also just a great picture book to read with your children. It really shows children that they need to look within themselves to make wishes come true. I love the illustrations too....they remind me of intricate tapestries I have only seen in museums.

Remembering 9/11

I can't believe it has been 10 years since the 9/11 attacks. It seems very surreal. I was working in NYC at the time and saw the towers fall....it was an eerie day one filled with apprehension and despair. So many news outlets are showing footage of that day....I still have hard time looking at the images.

A friend asked me to recommend some books for her students. There are so many to choose from. Here are just a few to help explain this horrible day in American History....

As Promised: I love, love, love this book!

The Man in the Moon (Guardians of Childhood) by William Joyce has to be one of the most wonderful books I have ever seen. As I stated yesterday I have always been a William Joyce fan. I love the way he writes and the beautiful images he paints. This is no exception. I remember being a little girl and my Mother pointing out the face of the "Man in the Moon" to me. It always comforted me to see his smiling face. I think Mr Joyce is a national treasure....his books always come along just when I need them most. This whole idea of "Guardians of Childhood" brings me back to a time when life was simple and goodness was all around. It is sad that we can only appreciate the magic of childhood when we are grownup and think back to our past. Thank you Mr Joyce for the joy you bring to all.

This is a must have new classic....perfect for new parents and new babies.....or anyone who wants the children around them to have magic in their lives....

I can't believe I missed celebrating the 2 year Anniversary of this Blog! I am usually really good about dates and celebrating milestones. I do have a good excuse though, I was sitting in the dark with no electricity on Aug 28th due to Hurricane Irene. So I am rectifying my mistake and celebrating today. The question I asked myself was: How do I celebrate? Then I saw some notes I had made on books I wanted to talk about and realized that one of my favorite (and I mean FAVORITE) children's authors, William Joyce, was coming out with a new book today. Then I realized it was Tuesday, which means an older book. Of course I can go off routine, after all this is my blog, but that is not my style. What to do????? I will talk about his new book tomorrow and an old favorite today. I have already recommended two of my all time favorite William Joyce books, Santa Calls and Leaf Men so I chose my third favorite.

George Shrinks by William Joyce has always been one the best books to read aloud. I think it is the first book Mr Joyce wrote and illustrated himself. There is no agenda with this book....it is just about a boy who dreams he is small and the dream comes true. I like how the words are simple but without the illustrations we wouldn't get the full story. It is this combination of words and pictures that make this book really special. They need each other. It is one of those fun titles that can't help but make you smile. Whenever I read this aloud I loved to watch the children's faces as they experienced George's adventures. This is a must have classic book for any child's bookshelf!

I can't believe it is Labor Day Weekend already. Some kids are back in school and some will start this week. It seems like the summer went by too fast. I loved spending time with the children in my life this summer. It amazes me how inquisitive most children are, which is why I love today's book. It is a great book to have handy when a question comes up we have trouble answering.

National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why by Amy Shields is the perfect book for the questioning child in your life. I love how the book is easy to read with lots of great facts and photos to look at. This is a great first reference book and should help children learn things in a fun way. I almost want to recommend it to any grown- up, just to keep on hand for when a child asks "Why?".... it should come in handy. A great new reference book for any children's library!

I'm Here by Peter H. Reynolds is one of the sweetest books I have found in a long time. It is the kind of book that I would give to a child who has trouble fitting in or who is shy. When I first read it I was moved to tears. I totally understood the feelings and emotions of this simply told story. After I read it I learned that it was written with autistic children in mind. I love how a story can be told without too many words and too many explanations. Mr Reynolds has out done himself in a presenting a book that is timeless and beautiful. A must have new book.

I realized it has been a week since I last posted. Hurricane Irene got in the way..... lucky for me I had no real damage and only a little bit of food got spoiled. The storm has brought cooler days which tells me summer is waning. The kids in my neighborhood and my nephews are busy shopping for school supplies and getting new clothes. Here is another old favorite to read for Back to School!

Froggy Goes to School by Jonathan London and illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz was always a favorite to read during this time of year. He was one of my nephews favorite characters. I liked to read this book because it really captures a child's anxiety of the unknown. I remember exactly the same feelings when the first day of school rolled around. This is a perfect book to alleviate any worries a child might have as a new school year approaches. A must have perennial story to be read!

Here on the East coast school doesn't start for another few weeks but in other parts of the country it has already started. I thought I would suggest one of my favorite books about school....

A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech and illustrated by Harry Bliss is a fun book that really illustrates how being over enthusiastic about something is not always a good thing. I love how the principle isn't really a bad guy nor is he intentionally being mean....he just loves his school. He loves it so much he wants it to open everyday even on Sundays and holidays. It takes a little girl, who also loves school, to help him realize that he is going over board with his ideas. Like I said this is a great read especially at the beginning of the school year when kids don't want to summer vacation to end. It is a good and funny way to show them that it could worse and they could be going every day. I also love Harry Bliss' illustrations.....the characters are so expressive. A must have back to school title!

Pooh's Little Instruction Book by A.A. Milne published by Dutton. I always thought Pooh was perfect for this format!

The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff is more of an adult book----well it is an adult book. But that doesn't mean I can't recommend it for today. I always thought it was a wonderful way to help explain Taoism....not that I understand it but I got out it through this book is that we should all be more like Winnie the Pooh---living in the moment.

In the last couple of days I have met the most beautiful babies. They were so sweet and cute. This one little baby looked so familiar to me...although I didn't know him. Then it hit me, he reminded me of the the little baby on the cover of today's book. I used to love to sing this song to my nephews and my niece.

Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes by Annie Kubler is a perfect first book for children. Children like the repetitive nature of the song. It was always a great way teach babies the parts of their body. This is a must have book for a new baby.....I loved to hear how babies laugh when we sang this....

oh and the baby I saw yesterday....had overalls just like this too!

What a a nasty rainy day. This is the kind of day that makes me just want to curl up and read a book. It is also a good day to play games and snack and basically goof off....

I am not much of a games player but I love trivia which is why today's book is a great book to pick up and peruse...

Every Day On Earth: Fun Facts that Happen Every 24 Hours by Steve Murrie his son Matthew and illustrated by Tom Bloom is the perfect book for a rainy day or any day. I like how the book is set up and easy to read. Even though it is meant for children I can see many adults being pulled into it's fascinating pages. I love books on facts and love to learn new things....I know lots of kids who are the same way. My nephews Alex and Michael are just two that I know personally. This is the kind of book I would have loved to have growing up...(it can also very addicting. ) I have already learned so much....I finally know exactly what makes a cell phone a "smart phone", how the early Americans made pumpkin pie (a recipe I would love to try ---) and that more people feel that macaroni & cheese is the best comfort food....

This is a perfect book to makes learning fun!

Today a special teen edition of Flashback Tuesday!

Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer was my introduction to this wonderful author. This is the story of a teenage girl who ends up driving her elderly employer across country to stop a disastrous business merger. I remember picking the book and thinking it was quite implausible. I changed my mind as soon as I started reading it. The characters and story drew me in immediately. This is a quirky story that manages to tug at the heartstrings without being too sappy. I would recommend this title to a any teenager. It will give them a great perspective on life. A great summer read.

Growing up my Mother was a bit old fashioned. She never felt the need to sit with her kids and go over the alphabet because she felt that we would learn it in school. That being said she was always reading and singing to us which helped prepare us for school anyway.

Nowadays kids need to at least have a basis on which to grow. Working in the bookstore and as a book buyer I saw many books on teaching preschoolers the basics....their ABC'S, their numbers....shapes etc. It was always a rare book that took these simple concepts and made them into something special. Today's book is that kind of book....

Everything I Need to Know Before I'm Five by Valorie Fisher; illustrated by Valorie Fisher - Hardcover - Random House is the perfect little book for preschoolers. First off I was drawn to the title....always very important. It reminded me of the book All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten and similar titles. I love the graphics and the quirkiness of the photographs. This is a perfect new parent book or baby gift. A wonderful little book that will be read again and again!

I realized going through some of the topics I have covered on this blog that I might be a little prejudiced against "cats". I don't mean to be....it is just I am more of a dog lover and whenever I see a dog book I melt. That being said I know that there are many cat fanciers out in the world so I need to give them equal time. It was funny to come across today's book because it has a very similar story line to a book I loved last week: Weiner Wolf.

Fuddles written and illustrated by Frans Vischer is the story of a spoiled cat who escapes his indoor paradise only to find the outside world is not that much fun. This is a fun book that I know so many cat lovers can appreciate. The illustrations are wonderfully visual ----- making this a fun read. A "purrrfect" book to read aloud....I can practically hear the giggles now

Flashback Tuesday: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming

A few nights ago I was flipping channels on the TV when I stopped to watch one of my favorite movies of childhood. Watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang brought back so many memories. I remembered also that it was a favorite of my brother Michael's. We used to pretend that we had a car like that. I also remember finding the book on our bookshelves. ( It wasn't until I was much older that I realized that the author of this magical book also created "James Bond"--- I guess he always liked gadgets!)

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming~ This classic novel is nothing at all like the movie. At first this was disconcerting to me but then I realized that I could like both because both were enjoyable. This is the kind of book I always liked. It had adventure and intrigue with bits of humor spliced in. I would imagine myself as Jemima and my brother as Jeremy. I would love for this classic book to be rediscovered by children today.....it makes a perfect summer reading title. I think it would also be a great book to read with your child....a wonderful read aloud at bedtime. "Truly Scrumptious".....

Flashback Tuesday: Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories by Dr Seuss

My sister Ann and my brother-in-law Marc go every year to volunteer at Camp Takumta in Vermont. It is children's camp for kids with cancer. Every year they come back with stories of these amazing and resilient kids. It always makes me cry. There is always a theme for the week....this year's theme is Dr Seuss. All the counselors and cabin leaders are reading a Dr Seuss book they even dress in costume, which is always fun. My niece Celia helped my sister make little awards for he cabin of little girls.....they came out really cute with a seusian flare about them. My sister's story comes from today's book....which makes it perfect to talk about.

Dr Seuss always wrote stories that have some sort of message in them...even if the message doesn't always seem clear. Yertle the Turtle is the same way....although the message in each of the three stories seems clear as the proverbial bell. The second story entitled "Gertrude McFuzz" is the story my sister is reading. It teaches us that sometimes envy is can cause more trouble than it's worth and that we should be happy with who we are. These stories are a great way to teach children without being preachy. These books aren't read as much as the more common Dr Seuss books but they come in handy when a point needs to be made. A must have book for all children....and some grown ups too!

Weiner Wolf by Jeff Crosby

I have been wishing for a dog lately. I was dog sitting my brother's dog for a week and now I miss him. I have also established a relationship with my neighbors dog....he is so cute when he runs to see me when I come outside. I think because of this I have been much more attuned to any dog book I see on the shelf.

Wiener Wolf by Jeff Crosby is a really fun new book about a dog who is tired of his pampered life with Granny that he earns for life in the wild. I am not usually a dachshund fan but this little puppy's expressions are priceless....I love how it is a warm hearted story without being sappy. This is a wonderful book to be read at bedtime. A precious new book that I would recommend as a must have new book. So cute....

Stumbled across today's book and was immediately reminded of my niece Celia who never wanted to go to sleep when she was a little girl. I can still see her lying on the guest room bed with her feet up against the wall telling me she wasn't tired. I wish I had this book to read to her then----the illustrations remind me of her too!

The World Champion of Staying Awake by Sean Taylor and illustrated by Jimmy Liao is a really sweet picture book about a little girl trying to get her stuffed animals to go to sleep. It is really shows how a child's imagination can work. Very clever with adorable illustrations. A must have new bedtime story....

While wandering around the library I saw some books on display about Edgar Degas, the famed artist. I realized that today is his birthday. I remembered a book I loved that told the story of his famous sculpture, Little Dancer of Fourteen Years. Sadly my favorite book about Degas was not on display...luckily I can recommend it here today~

Degas and the Little Dancer by Laurence Anholt has always been one of my favorite biographical picture books. It came out in a time when there weren't that many books like it. This beautifully illustrated picture book told the true story of how a famed artist created an iconic sculpture. When I was in the stores I liked to read it during a ballet story time, especially if there were older children in the group. I also always recommend it to anyone looking for a ballet book as a gift. It is the perfect book for little ballerinas everywhere. A classic book that spawned others but is still timeless today.

It has been so disheartening to watch the news lately. It seems like no one can get along. I especially hate the political climate where nobody can agree on anything. Each "side" claims they are doing the best for our country but all I see is fighting which makes me wonder if that is true. Like I said it is very sad to have such divisiveness in this country. Which is why I felt a sense of hope when I discovered today's book.

We Are America: A Tribute from the Heart by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated by Christopher Myers is a beautiful book that shows us all that this country was, is and hopes to be. This book illustrates in a simple way that America is filled with diverse and incredible people, it is because of our diversity that we are who we are. It teaches children (and adults) what patriotism is all about. That even though we come from different backgrounds and cultures we all have a commonality about us. By really looking at our past we can truly see our future. Walter Dean Myers profound poems combined with the wonderful illustrations of his son Christopher are a great way to teach children what it means to be an American----.

As Mr Myers writes: To each child a freedom dream
   To each soul the sweet taste of liberty
   To each heart give the promise
   Of America.

Flashback Tuesday: Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe

I have been dog sitting my brother's dog for the past few days. He is very cute and I love taking care of him but I forget that he needs to go out at night. Last night as I took him out I saw something I had forgotten about~ an abundance of fireflies blinking in the night. I was immediately sent back in time to childhood summers of staying out late and chasing fireflies. I can still see my Dad punching holes in jar lids so we could catch the fireflies. All night long I tried to remember a book I used to read to kids during the summer when I came across today's book.

Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe is definitely a flashback to another time. I love the soft illustrations and sweet easy to read story of catching fireflies. It is a sweet sentimental story that is soothing to read on a warm summer night. The cover is what I remember and what I saw last night while the fireflies flew~

Reference Sunday: Potato Chip Science: 29 Incredible Experiments by Allen Kurzweil

Every year my family and I go on vacation to Long Beach Island, NJ. One family tradition has us going to Uncle Will's Pancake House for a family breakfast. In past years we would always wait for a table while browsing The Atlantic Bookshop next door. It is a great bookstore with lots to offer. When my niece and nephews were small my sister would buy them little activity books to use while we waited for breakfast. A couple of years ago the store moved to a different location. So instead of going before breakfast we usually go afterwards. This year was no different. It actually works out well because I always need a walk after eating a delicious breakfast.

While perusing the store the store this past week I came across today's book.....Potato Chip Science by Allen Kurzweil . I thought Workman Publishing had done it again by packaging a book on experiments with stuff to do those experiments in a potato chip bag. Just when I thought I had seen everything....again very clever. Clever packaging aside a book like this is only good if it is useful. While it doesn't have all the components to do the experiments with it has enough to get a child started. This is actually a great science kit because it appeals to the adult who wants their child to learn something and it appeals to the child who likes stuff. I especially liked the fact that the bag can be turned into a kind of kite....which is a very popular past time down the shore.

Special Flashback Wed: The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

I have been a little lax in posting lately. Basically because I am in vacation mode. The sun has been beautiful here on Long Beach Island and it is hard to use the computer on the beach. As this is a family vacation I have also been spending my nights eating and playing games. Last night we played "Clue" with the kids. I needed to relearn the rules myself as I hadn't played in ages. The game board is much fancier than I remembered. While we were going over the instructions my nephew JoJo wanted to know if it was like The Westing Game.....a book he said he liked a lot. I liked how he knew to compare the two.

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is the perfect book for the curious young reader. It is a great mystery book. It is the kind of book I read when I was an adult but knew my younger self would have loved it. Since it is summer it makes a great summer reading title. Since it won the Newbery award it should be on most school reading lists.

If your child has already read this then they should try some books by Blue Balliett: Chasing Vemeer, The Wright 3, The Calder Game, and The Danger Box. These are great mysteries too!

As to our game of Clue last night, while JoJo tried really hard and was very enthusiastic my nephew Alex came out the winner in both of the games we played. I sense a rematch in the near future!

I haven't been posting lately because I have been busy with my other endeavor ~ The Savory Garden~ the veggie burger business I have with my sister-in-law. Our farmer's market season had started again and we were busy preparing and cooking all last week.

Today's book wasn't what I originally planned but as they say "plans change"....I was so excited to read that Beau Bridges in working on making The Giver into a film. I think that is wonderful. While we are all familiar with this Newbery Award winning title and it's iconic cover.....I think Mr Bridges will be perfect for the role.

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry is what some consider part of "The Giver" trilogy. I always felt there was a connection but it is a subtle connection. I loved this story just as much...if not more....because I could identify more with the characters. It is also a futuristic society only this time it is more primitive but no less different or challenging than the world we live in. Like I said I don't feel it is sequel to " The Giver" it is a perfect companion piece----these books are stories of two completely opposite ways of living....but both are destructive. Since most children read "The Giver" in school I think Gathering Blue would make a perfect summer reading title....beautifully written and lovely to read....maybe some day Beau Bridges will want to make a film of this also....

Friday Fun Book: Catch That Baby by Nancy Coffelt illustrated by Scott Nash

It has been a long time since I have been around a baby. Last Sunday I got to hold a sweet little baby boy who loves Ice Cream. He is a boy after my own heart....so sweet.

Catch That Baby by Nancy Coffelt and illustrated by Scott Nash reminds me of all the babies who have come in and out of my life. Most babies love to run around sans clothes and sometimes it truly is hard to "catch" them. This is a really cute book that is really fun to read. I love the illustrations for their cartoony aspect and because it matches the baby's antics so well. I can't think of any child who wouldn't find this funny. I also think it would make a great present for new parents....it can show them what they have to look forward to. A fun fun book!

It is a sure sign of summer when kids are out selling lemonade.....my neighbors little girl just set up her stand.....so sweet.

The Summer Solstice by Ellen Jackson and illustrated by Jan Davey Ellis is a beautifully illustrated book that details how different countries and cultures--ancient and contemporary celebrate the first day of Summer. This book has a lot of information along with great activities and even a few recipes. I like that it combines history with science so that there is something for everyone. A great book to use throughout the summer for when the doldrums set in.

Summer Jackson: Grown Up by Teresa E. Harris and illustrated by Ag Ford is a really sweet read aloud book that sure to become a favorite. The author is so spot on with her depiction of a child who can't wait to grow up. I always marvel at children who try constantly to be considered a grown up. This just doesn't apply to girls but to boys as well. This is the kind of book that makes me wish I was doing story times again. It is a fun read with wonderful illustrations. I know that not only will the kids enjoy it but their parents too. This is the perfect book for the mini adult in your life....

What better way to celebrate Flag Day but with a book that celebrates our flag. I was never one to want to change our National Anthem....it makes me cry. Whenever I hear this song as well as see our beautiful flag I am filled with great emotion and pride at being an American.

The Star-Spangled Banner written by Francis Scott Key and illustrated with wonderful illustrations by Peter Spier is a must have book for everyone. I love how Mr Spier's illustrations really capture the words and bring them to life. There is so much to look at in this book that children will never be bored. It has all the words to the Anthem....which we never really hear. I like the collection of flags of the United States and all the historical data too. The fact that it is more than just a picture book means it can have a broader audience. This is definitely a book that can grow with a child. A must have book for all ages...

This past weekend was a bit busy. Yesterday I attended and volunteered at the BCCL'S biennial BooksNJ event at the Paramus Public Library. It was a great event that showcased lots of authors from the New Jersey area. I volunteered because my friend Alexa works there and said they might need help. It was fun unpacking books and seeing titles that were new to me. I remember thinking how I love the smell of new books and that I missed handling them. As much as e-books may be the wave of the future that is one thing they can't give you ----a new book smell.

I usually like to write about a reference or nonfiction book on Sunday's but I never got the chance to do a posting. So today I thought I would recommend a book I saw at yesterday's festival. I sat in on a Non-fiction panel for young readers that was very interesting. One of the author's was Ann Malaspina....she showcased a few of her titles and talked about the difference between writing a nonfiction picture book versus a nonfiction young reader. I picked today's book because I like the characters and the story and because it takes place in a library ---which I thought was an appropriate setting since the events of yesterday was all about libraries.

Finding Lincoln by Ann Malaspina and illusrated beautifully by Colin Bootman takes place in Alabama in 1951. It is the story of a boy who wants to find out more about Abraham Lincoln but is not allowed in the "whites only" library because he is African American. The kind librarian helps him after hours to find the information he needs. It is a sweetly told story that is not preachy. It is a great way to teach children about this time in our recent history that explains about segregation. I was also drawn to this books for two other reasons....the main character is named Louis---like my Dad and it has to do with Abraham Lincoln---who my Mother loved.

The Allegra Biscotti Collection by Olivia Bennett is a refreshing new character for the tween and early teen girl in your life. I say refreshing because there is no mystery or vampire around in this story of a girl who becomes a fashion designer. I know many a little girl who loves clothes and who say they want to design them when they grow up. The characters are well written and likable. I found myself wishing I had some sort of fashion sense just like Emma Rose or as she is more well know "Allegra Biscotti"....a perfect book for the little fashionista in your life.

There is a second book too: Who What Wear: The Allegra Biscotti Collection which just came out....two great books perfect for summer reading....

I love how a slip in the facts of American History can result in a "teachable moment". This is the perfect time to reinforce some American History to our children. This "teachable moment" also gave me a topic for today's posting.

Paul Revere's Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and illustrated by Ted Rand is the perfect book to start the conversation about what really happened during this moment in history. The words are iconic and the illustrations are wonderful and perfectly represent this historic moment.

Normally I just do one book on Tuesdays.....but I think there is an exception to every rule. Here are some other books for children to help understand the importance of Paul Revere's Ride!

Many Rides of Paul Revere by James Cross Giblin is great biography of Paul Revere. This book is an overall biography of his life and gives a more accurate telling of what occurred during the American Revolution and his part in it.

Paul Revere's Ride (Step Into Reading) by Shana Corey and illustrated by Chris O'Leary is a beginning reader book for the younger student to read and learn from. It has lots of information which is told in a simpler language.

And Then What Happened, Paul Revere? by Jean Fritz and illustrated by Margot Tomes is a more detailed account of this historic ride and includes more tidbits and information then in most stories. Jean Fritz is a master at bringing history to life.

A Picture Book of Paul Revere by David A. Adler and illustrated by John & Alexandra Wallner is another book written for younger children. Mr Adler like Jean Fritz is notable for his great biographies that are perfect for children. This is no exception .

Let It Begin Here!: Lexington & Concord: First Battles of the American Revolution by Dennis Brindell Fradin and illustrated by Larry Day is a great book to give an overview of the start of the American Revolution. It includes Paul Revere's ride and the events that surrounded it plus much more.

These are just a few books I think would help explain what really happened in the early years American History.....I hope they help.

Reference Sunday: Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg

Chris Van Allsburg has always been an incredible storyteller. His stories and illustrations are iconic and unforgettable. His newest book is a departure for him because it is based on a true story.

Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg is the based on the true account of Annie Edson Taylor a 62 years old woman who in 1901 decided to have the adventure of a lifetime. The fact that her idea of an adventure is riding in a barrel over Niagara Falls is even more amazing. I love this story. It is a great way to show children that we are never too old to do something new. Annie Edson Taylor is a new heroine for little girls to look up to. While we may not want our children to do something quite as dangerous as this, I do think we want our children to never stop experiencing life.

Mr Van Allsburg's illustrations are wonderful as usual but even his words paint a picture. His description of the Falls themselves made me feel like I was actually there.

The Evil Garden by Edward Gorey

Today is my friend Lindsay's birthday. I haven't seen her in awhile but we keep in touch through email. When I saw today's book I thought of her immediately. She has always loved Edward Gorey and anything macabre. When we worked together she had the Edward Gorey alphabet poster on our wall in the back room. She thought it was appropriate because she worked off the children's section and well "it was an alphabet poster"....

The Evil Garden by Edward Gorey has been reissued as a children's book, albeit a book meant for an older child ages 9-12. At first I didn't think it was for children but realized that it is a sort of nursery rhyme that only Edward Gorey could write. I think it is a great book for an older child...especially the child who likes all things morbid or gruesome. It is actually a fun sort of story in a frightful way. It is also a great gift for a grown up in your life who is like my friend....oh and it is also perfect for her because she is quite the gardener too! Dare I say "enjoy'~

When Bob Met Woody by Gary Golio illustrated by Marc Burckhardt

I have mentioned before my love of music. Growing up I was exposed to many different kinds of music. I like anything from Classical to Pop....and everything in between even a bit of Heavy Metal. My parents always had the classical music station playing in the background. Every Saturday night we would listen to a music program called "Woody's Children" --- a homage to Woody Guthrie and folk music. I was also aware of Bob Dylan....I have older siblings who loved listened to him. I learned at an early age that Bob Dylan's real name is "Robert Zimmerman" and that he chose Dylan as his stage name because of the poet Dylan Thomas----my sister the writer told me that. It did surprise me to learn that Bob Dylan just turned 70 years old, I missed his birthday last week. Since then I have come across a great picture book biography that details Bob Dylan's early life and his meeting with the iconic Woody Guthrie.

When Bob Met Woody: The Story of the Young Bob Dylan by Gary Golio and illustrated by Marc Burckhardt is a picture book biography for older children to read and learn about a music icon. I think it would also be a great book for the music lover in your life no matter what age. I would give it to a child who is musically inclined along with some Cd's of both Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie songs. For that matter it would make a great family gift too. It is beautifully told with illustrations that perfectly match the character of the story.

Flashback Tuesday: Dinosaur Roar! by Paul & Henrietta Stickland

Yesterday I finally fulfilled a birthday promise to my nephew Michael V. I had promised to take him into NYC ----ride in a cab, buy him lunch and most importantly take him to the American Museum of Natural History. It turned out to be a really fun day. We saw lots of different exhibits but one of the main things was the fourth floor filled with dinosaurs. It was the most crowded exhibit and one of the most impressive, even for me---a grown up. It was also where all the little kids seemed to gravitate towards. There are many books that I could talk about but today I wanted to highlight one of my favorites.

Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland is not really a book about dinosaurs but about teaching children about opposites. The wonderful thing about the book is that it gives a child characters that they love, i.e: dinosaurs and pairs them with sounds rhymes. This is a way to teach children. It is a colorful book that is fun to read aloud, especially in a story time setting. This is a classic book that never goes out of style. Perfect for the little dinosaur in your life....

Reference Sunday: Happy Memorial Day!

Tomorrow is actually Memorial Day ....May 30th was also the original day we celebrated until it was moved to the last Monday in May. I also never knew that Memorial Day was once called Decoration Day and has been celebrated since the Civil War. I like the idea of "Decoration Day" ----I think it is wonderful that so many people go out and put flags on the graves of all who have served in our military.

Last year I recommended two books that show children the importance of this special holiday. It is not just a day to play. Here is my post from Memorial Day 2010 as a reminder. Today I am suggesting 2 more books that would also be a great way to explain this holiday to children.

Stars and Stripes Celebrate Memorial Day by Madeline Collins is a book for younger children that explains the holiday in a simplified way, delving into it's history and traditions. I love the fact that the author wrote this as a Girls Scout project and that the proceeds are donated to the Bob Woodruff Foundation which helps wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven and illustrated by Mike Benny is a beautifully illustrated story that deals with honoring those who have served and died for their country. A moving picture book that really cuts to the heart of what Memorial Day is all about.

Helping Children Deal with Trauma

Yesterday I spent all day at Book Expo in NYC. I had forgotten how nice it is to talk about books all day with other people who love them. While I was there I came across a publisher of self help books for children. I was very interested in this subject. There has been so much horrible news of late that I have been wondering how children are dealing with it. If the images from the floods and tornados are making me cry than I am sure it is affecting them too. I have wanted to recommend some books that would help children deal with natural disasters, sadness or trauma but hadn't been able to find books I liked. Luckily I stumbled across Magination Press and found they have the perfect books to deal with just these situations.

A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret M. Holmes and illustrated by Cary Pillo is described as "a story for children who have witnessed violence or trauma". The book is written in a language children can understand with a character they can relate to. Because it doesn't say specifically what the child witnessed, it can be used for any type of situation. Which makes it more universal.

Jenny is Scared When Sad Things Happen in the World by Carol Shuman, PhD and illustrated by Cary Pillo is also a perfect book to help children deal with what they see on television. We can try to hide the images but kids have a way of noticing things we don't want them too.

I'll Know What to Do A Kid's Guide to Natural Disasters by Bonnie S. Mark PhD and Aviva Layton with illustrations by Michael Chesworth is book that not only deals with facts about hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes etc but it also talks about the feelings and emotions these natural disasters can incur. This is for an older child but I think younger children can also get some good information from it.

Peppe the Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone and beautifully illustrated by Ted Lewin is a wonderful immigration story that takes place in the early days of the 20th century. This book always reminded me of my Dad's family. Well actually both my parent's families. I was reminded of this book at a family wedding this weekend. Talking to my cousins made me think of all the times I visited Greenwich Village growing up. My father's family settled in NY at around the same time this book takes place. My Mom's family also started out in this same area before moving to Brooklyn when my Mom was a very young. Plus I always liked that Peppe had 8 sisters while my Mom had six girls in her family. This book is a nice way to teach children about living in a time before electricity, when the nights were lit up by gas lamps that gave a hazy glow.

Before I ever started working in bookstores I worked in a library. Even then I loved working in the children's section. I liked to shelve in the picture book section because I got to read the books before I shelved them. This is probably where I discovered my love of fractured fairy tales or in this case nursery rhymes.

Each Peach Pear Plum by Janet and Allan Ahlberg was a book I discovered while shelving in the library. I liked the rhymes and sweet illustrations plus it was fun to play the "I Spy" aspect of the book. This book stands the test of time....it is a classic book that should be on every child's bookshelf.

Reference Sunday: Into the Unknown by Stewart Ross Illustrated by Stephen Biesty

I was so excited to find today's book. I have always admired Stephen Biesty's illustrations and his attention to detail. His books were always popular with children because of this detail. It always amazed me how kids would just pour over the illustrations looking at each specific fact of the picture.

Into the Unknown: How Great Explorers Found Their Way by Land, Sea and Air by Stewart Scott and illustrated by Stephen Biesty is a remarkable history book for children. It has the wonderful Cross-sections that Mr Biesty is known for but also tells fantastic tales of true life explorers such as Marco Polo or the Apollo 11 Astronauts. Mr Scott has a way of bringing history to life with his words which match perfectly with the detailed illustrations. I would recommend this book for all children to help them understand how history and exploration has shaped our world. A perfect gift for the inquisitive child in your life.

My Side of the Car by Kate Feiffer and illustrated by Jules Feiffer is a wonderful new book that should become a classic. I love how it is written and illustrated by a true father and daughter team and that it is based on something that really happened in their lives. I have always been a fan of Jules Feiffer's illustrations and books but this one seems even more special. The love the father has for his daughter is evident and sweet as is the optimism of the little girl. I couldn't help but while reading it to myself. This is a perfect book for any father to read to their child. It would also make a great new Daddy kind of gift....a must have book.

Flashback Tuesday: Stuck in Neutral by Terry Truman

This past weekend my sister Ann Burg participated in the Hudson Children's Book Festival in Hudson NY. Last week while she was busily preparing for the festival she mentioned some of the authors who were going to be there. I was quite impressed by the well known authors who were attending. I was really excited to hear that Terry Truman was also attending. I loved his book Stuck in Neutral when I first read it. It was brought to my attention when I was a panelist for the Children's Book Council 2001 edition of the Not Just For Children Anymore! catalog. It had a profound effect on me. This story of a boy who cannot communicate to the outside world but whose mind is sharp and full of astute observations is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. As I wrote for the catalog copy of the Not Just For Children Anymore! catalog it is "reminiscent of the adult book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominque Bauby. It was also powerful to me because it made me think of my father who due to a stroke could no longer speak even though we knew he was aware of what was going on around him. This book gave me a new perspective on what it must be liked to be trapped in your own body without a means to communicate. It is considered a Young Adult book but I feel should and could be read by a younger student. It is a great book to teach empathy and caring for people who are disabled.

When I was little Mother's Day was a special day. I remember my Father going outside and cutting flowers from the bushes around the house. He liked the idea of using what we have and he always made them looked better than flowers from the florist. My Mom loved flowers. She loved whatever we gave her even if it was only card we wrote ourselves. My brother Michael would write missives on how much he loved her. He was a great one for leaving notes on pillows.....

Sunday is Mother's Day and I thought I would just put out a little reminder of some great books that I loved to read at story time. These were perennial books that reminded me of what being a Mother was all about.

Are You My Mother by PD Eastman ----my all time favorite non Dr Seuss book.....a great read with kids.

Piggybook by Anthony Browne ----- This was one of my favorite books to read during story time. The Moms got such a kick out it. If you haven't read it then you must read it now....it so funny and a perfect read for Mother's Day!

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell----this is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have ever seen. It's simple story of three little owl's waiting for their Mother to come home is priceless.

A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams----This is such a sweet story....I could always feel the warmth and love between the characters.

My Cold Went on Vacation by Molly Rausch and illustrated by Nora Krug is a clever new book that is perfect to read on a cold and rainy day such as today (at least where I am). So many friends of mine are either suffering from allergies or fighting a Spring cold. This is a great book to read to a child while they are sick in bed to help stir their imagination. I love the idea that a cold "actually" travels around the world. The little boy who narrates the book sounds like all the children I know who are inquisitive and curious. It is an easy read with really fun and quirky illustrations. I would have loved to read this at a story time.....just to see the kids reactions and thoughts about where a "cold" goes.....

Today is the wonderful iconic folk singer Pete Seeger's 92nd birthday. I have always loved his music and storytelling.

Abiyoyo Book and CD by Pete Seeger and illustrated by Michael Hays is a classic and timeless tale. I remember hearing the story and song long before I read the book. Pete Seeger's voice is unmistakable and his storytelling skills are classic. This has always been of one my favorite stories. I love how the father and son work together to save the day. It was a fun story to read at story time because we could act it out. It is very easy to get children involved in the story. This is a great version because it has a cd so we can also listen to Mr Seeger's wonderful voice. I also love how the illustrations show a very multicultural environment which makes the story universal. A must have book ~

Today is my nephew Joseph's 12th birthday or as I like to call him JoJo. Last year I wrote about a book that teaches kid's Chinese. He is still taking Chinese in school and seems to still like it. Not only does he still like learning this very difficult language he loves the food. He has also always loved Chinese food. I think he could eat it every day. A few years ago his class had to put together a cookbook and the recipe he contributed was an easy Lo Mein dish he loved. His love of Chinese food inspired me to recommend this really great book to help teach kids the art of cooking a real Chinese menu.

Fun with Chinese Cooking by Frances Lee is geared toward kids ages 8 and up who love to cook. The recipes are easy to read with step by step instructions and full color photographs. This book is a great way for kids to learn how to make some foods that they thought they could only get out to eat. I like how there is an explanation of the dishes with side bars that have extra tips that are fun to read. So if you know a child who loves Chinese food as much as my nephew does than this would be a great book for them.....

Today's entry is for my friend Joe S. I have known Joe since High School and he is very interested in his Italian heritage. So I thought today's book would be perfect for him.

Storie Italiane-Italian Stories: A parallel text easy reader (volume 1) by Jessica Kosinski, illustrated by Julie Leiman Weaver and translated by Claudia Cerulli is a great book to help teach not only the Italian language but about Italy as well. The book has five stories that take place in five different Italian cities. I am especially partial to this volume because one of the stories takes place in Palermo, Sicily which is where my grandmother grew up. I like how each story has the Italian version on top of the page and the translation just below it. The stories are fun and interesting and really capture the Italian culture and lifestyle. This is great for a classroom or for a child who is interested in learning Italian as well as any adult who wants to learn this beautiful language. I took Italian in school so this would be a nice refresher book for me. I am very rusty but this book reminded me how much I enjoyed learning Italian.

Today is the birth anniversary of the famed naturalist and bird illustrator John James Audubon. It is in his honor and because it is still Poetry Month that I chose today's book.

I Am Phoenix: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by Ken Nutt is a wonderful book of bird poems. I have always liked the idea of books being written to be read aloud by two people (or more). I think by making these poems interactive they become more accessible to children. This book is a great companion book to Mr Fleischman's Newbery winning title A Joyful Noise:Poems for Two Voices. I think Mr Nutt's illustrations are a perfect complement to these simple bird poems.

Tomorrow is Easter Sunday. As of today Lent is pretty much over. Holy Saturday was the day my Mom would say I could eat chocolate again (as this was what I always seemed to give up for lent).

The Story of Easter by Aileen Fisher and illustrated by Stefano Vitale is a great book to share with children about this important Christian holiday. Aileen Fisher not only describes what Easter Sunday is all about but she delves into the symbols of the holiday, such as Easter Bunnies, Easter Eggs as well as talking about Passover. She explains how different cultures celebrate this important Christian holiday and it's significance in the world. I am also partial to the illustrations which Mr Vitale does beautifully. This is a must have book for a child who celebrates this wonderful holiday.

In honor of the first day of Passover I thought I would recommend one of my favorite stories. I like this one because it is told from a different point of view.

Miriam's Cup A Passover Story by Fran Munushkin and illustrated beautifully by Bob Dacey tells the story of the first Passover from Moses' sister Miriam's point of view. I think it is a wonderful way to really explain what Passover is all about. I was always intrigued by Miriam, ever since I saw the Ten Commandments on TV as a child. I thought she was very brave to follow her brother in the river to make sure he was safe. This is a lovely book to add to your holiday bookshelf. A must have title for all to enjoy. Happy Passover!

I have always had a love hate relationship with Nonsense Poems. Being a bit of a linear person I have always wanted things to make sense. As I have grown older I have realized that sometimes things don't need to make sense or have a reason behind them....sometimes things are just fun for the fun of it.

His Shoes Were Far Too Tight: Poems by Edward Lear masterminded by Daniel Pinkwater (his word) and illustrated by the talented artist and author Calef Brown is the kind of book we all need in our life. I wished I had this book when I was a child, maybe then I would have understood fun for the fun of it sooner rather than later. Mr Pinkwater has picked some great examples of Edward Lear's poems to share with children. I love Calef Brown's illustrations because they are the perfect accompaniment to these fantastical poems. This is a must have book for a child's (or adult's) library. A perfect book for Poetry Month!

Today is the 150th Anniversary of the attack at Fort Sumter, SC which basically started the American Civil War. Today's book is a great way to reflect on this critical time in our history.

Fields of Fury: The American Civil War by James McPherson is a wonderful and concise book that explains the whys and the wherefores of this major event in American history. I loved this book when I first saw it because I felt that it made this conflict totally accessible to children. The Civil War has always been a complicated story to tell. I find it amazing that even today people argue as to what the real causes were for this war. This book, while written for children, is actually good for older people too. I loved the artwork and the photographs which really bring this historical moment to life. I think it is a must have on anyone's shelf....not just children.

It is new in board book form which is the perfect format as it lends itself better to little hands. It is has a soothing and lilting text that can be read over and over again without getting tired. I love the soft illustrations and cute expressions on all the animals. A wonderful addition to a toddler's library of books.

How Did That Get In My Lunchbox?: The Story of Food by Chris Butterworth and illustrated by Lucia Gaggiotti is a wonderful new book that explains to children where their food comes from. I love the retro feeling of the illustrations. I liked the way it reads too....it never talks down to the reader but doesn't confuse them either. It is a great little book to help explain that food doesn't just appear in the grocery store, that it needs to be grown and prepared. It would be great book to read in the classroom without seeming too educational. I would have loved to do an event around this book because the hands on activities would have been fun to do.

I was reminded of this book by a friend of mine who read it to her class to celebrate the start of Poetry Month. It is very appropriate for her because she loves dogs.....

Dogku by Andrew Clements and illustrated by Tim Bowers is a sweet story of a homeless dog looking for a family. It is written in Haiku style which makes it a perfect book to read during Poetry Month. There is such a warmth to the illustrations that I dare anyone not to fall in love with "Mooch" at first sight. This is also a perfect book for all the dog lover's in your life. A timeless tale that will be read again and again.

It was a sad day when I heard that one of my favorite author's had died. Diana Wynne Jones wrote one of my favorite fantasy novels.

Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones plays on the themes I like best. It is like a fractured fairy tale only it is a "fractured" fantasy novel. What I loved about it was the way she wrote a satire of fantasy books without insulting the genre. I loved the characters and the warmth that penetrated the story. She was a master storyteller whose writing was filled with rich images and unforgettable characters. This is the kind of book that is not just for children but for grownups as well. A truly must have for any fantasy fan. Diana Wynne Jones brought true magic to the world with her stories....she will be missed.

I am a proud New Jersyan! I know that sometimes we are stereotyped and given a bad rap ~ but we are not all like what is seen on TV. I usually try not to write about local stories but sometimes a local story can be good for the global environment.

Meadowlands: A Wetlands Survival Story by Thomas F Yezerski is the kind of local or regional book that has a universal appeal. Through the years I have seen personally how the wetlands in the Meadowlands has been built up. I was always amazed how swamp land could be used to build on. As a child I was afraid if people walked in it they would sink and never be seen again. As I grew older I felt bad that this was how the world perceived my state and thought that New Jersey was just one big swamp. New Jersey has beautiful parts to it too, I can attest to that. Finding this book has given me hope that someday this portion of my state will someday reclaim the beauty that it once was. I appreciate Mr Yezerski's efforts in explaining the history of this area from it's beginnings to now. I not only love the historical detail but the beautiful illustrations as well. It makes me proud that someone realizes that this place, a place most people write off, is still important and alive. This book is not just for New Jersyans but for anyone who loves the environment and wants to do something to preserve it. While this is a picture book for children ages 5-8 years old I truly believe older children and adults can learn something valuable in reading it. A must have title I truly recommend.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire ~ March 25th, 1911

One hundred years ago today The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory had a fire so devastating that it changed history. It amazes me how this one event is still relevant today. For weeks now labor unions and the rights of workers has been all over the news. It was because of this fire that there was a call to arms for workers rights and safety. My sister reminded me that our Mother, who was not yet born when this event occurred, was taught about it in school. It was taught to her like 9/11 is taught today. Here are some books that are helpful in explaining this significant moment in history.

Flesh and Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire and its Legacy by Al Marrin and published by Knopf books for Young Readers. This is the newest book on this subject. Very good for older children.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire (Graphic Library, Disasters in History) by Jessica Gunderson and published by Capstone Press. This is in graphic novel form. Perfect for the child who finds it easier to read this way.

Fire at the Triangle Factory by Holly Littlefield and illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young, published by Carolrhoda Books. This is a good book for younger readers. It is a fictionalized account of this terrible day.

These are only a few titles that are available on this historical event. They are a good starting point for a child to learn about this time in history.

Over the weekend I had a nice discussion with my nephew about the book he was reading in school. It brought back nice memories for me.

I read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi as an adult when I was working in the bookstore. I so wished it had been around when I was young as it was the kind of book I would have enjoyed. It has just the right mix of history and adventure that I loved. I have always admired Avi for the way he has of taking an unknown piece of history and making it come alive. He writes such courageous and human characters, they are real. I know most kids will probably read this in school but just in case they don't or they need to read a particular author I would highly recommend this as it has something for everyone. Even though the main character is a girl I know boys will like it too....thanks Michael for reminding me of a wonderful book.

Reference Sunday: 13 Planets: The Latest View of the Solar System

Growing up the only thing I remembered about the planets was the sentence we were taught to remember them. It went something like this: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pickles ---Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Then a few years ago I remember feeling bad because "Pluto" was no longer considered a planet, which totally made my sentence obsolete. In doing some research for information about last night's "supermoon" I came across this book from National Geographic about 13 Planets which intrigued me because I couldn't understand how we went from 8 planets to 13 in a short amount of time. Luckily this book is a great way to explain to kids how this happened.

13 Planets: The Latest View of the Solar System by David A. Aguilar and published by National Geographic kids was just published this month. It explains how Pluto came back into the planetary fold and how there are a few more just like it. It groups the planets into different types and explains the history of their names and where they are located. It also talks about the sun, astroid belts and the moons of each planet. I found it really interesting and well written. It doesn't talk down to a child (or a grown up who is science handicapped). It is written for an older child ages 9-12 but I think younger kids can certainly learn from it too. A great book to get ---- before the Astronomy community changes their mind again.

I do not come from an Irish American family....our roots come from Italy but that never stopped my Mother from celebrating St Patrick's Day in a somewhat traditional way. She always said that St Patrick was a great Saint and should be celebrated. Every year she would watch the St Patrick's Day parade, where green and make Irish Soda Bread. I only remember her making corned beef and cabbage a few times....my Dad was not fond of it....but we would always have the soda bread. So for my Mom and for the day I am wearing green while the Irish Soda Bread bakes in the oven.

Today is my father's birthday. I always remembered the date because it is the "Ides of March"... of course I never knew what that meant until I read Julius Caesar in school. I know so many people say this but in my case it is so true....my Dad was the best Dad in the world. He was....really. He was kind and understanding but never failed to teach us to do the right thing. We always knew where we stood with him and that more than anything he loved us. He taught me that no matter what I did he would support me even if he didn't agree with me. He only wanted what was best for his children.

Every Friday by Dan Yaccarino reminds me of my Dad. I was reminded of the book last week when I wrote about Mr Yaccarino's new book All the Way to America. Just looking at the cover for Every Friday evokes strong memories of going to work with my Dad. He dressed just like the father on the cover---right down to the hat. His briefcase was not really a briefcase but an art bag. But the idea is the same. I loved to go to my Dad's studio, he was a commercial artist and did photographic retouching (think photoshop by hand). I loved to sit at his desk and play with paints and watch the other artists ply their trade. I learned about mechanicals and story boards which always amazed me. The best part was going to lunch. We would go to the diner across the street (just like in the book) and have tuna sandwiches and milkshakes although he would have coffee. This sweet book of a father and son doing a similar ritual evokes such wonderful memories. Even though it is not exactly my story it is a wonderful story to read with your child and maybe help you start your own traditions with them.

I miss my Dad every day but know that he would be happy knowing the little things he did for me still mean alot. Happy Birthday Daddy...I love you!
